Killer Instinct trademarked renewed.

September 17, 2012

It’s fair to say, that the fighting game genre has come back in a big way in the past couple of years. The Street Fighter and Marvel VS series returned. Mortal Kombat had an impressive comeback. King of Fighter and Tekken are still international hits. Rumors are floating that Darkstalkers might make a return. And now, Microsoft & Rare has taken notice of the boom and renewed the trademark of Killer Instinct.

In case you were a unloved child or born in the 2000’s, Killer Instinct was a popular 2D fighting game of the mid 90’s. Created by Rare (makers of Banjo Kazooie, Conkers’ Bad Fur Day) and published by Midway & Nintendo, Killer Instinct is known for it’s long EPIC combos, soundtrack, gore and resemblance to Mortal Kombat with it’s finishers. Originally made for the arcades, SNES, Gameboy and Nintendo 64, the series is still viewed as the classic fighter.

So Microsoft has renewed the trademark but now what does this mean for the future of Killer Instinct? With no official games announced, we can only guess. For starters, I’m guessing Rare wants to hop on the HD remake bandwagon like a lot of other companies (COUGH CAPCOM) to bring Killer Instinct & KI: 2 or KI: Gold to the XBLA. As far as the possibility of the long awaited Killer Instinct 3, that might be awhile. Microsoft will definitely want to gauge the level of future success through sales of a remake for even the chance at a brand new sequel. Then again, the chances of a KI 3 as a launch title for a next-gen console are just as good as any. You can read the official announcement from the link at the bottom. Everything is up in the air still, but this still great news for long time fans like myself. Be sure to check back here as any more news or rumors about the return of Killer Instinct come up.
